"The Birth of the Christ in Us"

Dear Friend,

In this Christmas season, my thoughts this year turn to an often-used term – the “second coming of Christ.” Here at Unity, we teach that the birth of Jesus is both a historical fact and a current-day metaphor. For each of us, it represents an inner birth. It is the dawning of an experience of oneness with all that God is and with all people everywhere.

Simply put, the birth of the Christ in us is our acceptance of the eternal truth that we are, at this moment, as much “one with God” as we will ever be. Becoming in fact (on earth) what we have always been in potential (in Heaven) is a matter of claiming and accepting our divinity. It is being willing to accept that all the qualities of God (love, power, wisdom, aliveness, joy, beauty, and innocence) are also in us.

One of my favorite quotations is from the twelfth-century mystic, Meister Eckhart.

Referring to the often-repeated Bible verse, “For God so loved the world that he gave His only-begotten son,” (John 3:16) Meister Eckhart said, “God is forever begetting the only-begotten.” In other words, God only has one child. That child, of which we have such a wonderful example in Jesus, is both the True Self of each of us and the sum of all our True Selves – the “Body of Christ” in which each of us is a cell.

The “second coming of Christ” has already been happening, both individually and collectively. Whenever love triumphs over fear; whenever someone realizes that he or she is too powerful to be a victim; whenever someone gets quiet enough to hear the voice for God; whenever someone has an in-body experience of oneness with a person from whom he or she had felt separate, the Christ is born again.

This time, “the coming of the Christ” will no doubt be all of us together establishing the Body of Christ on Earth. This time there probably will not be a Jesus or a Buddha to epitomize that birth. This time it will probably be up to each of us “ordinary” people to accept that we each have a piece of the puzzle, and that the only way the puzzle will come together is when we all share our pieces with each other.

Let this be your time to accept the second coming of Christ – in you. Let this be your time to affirm, “The mind, heart, and spirit that were in Jesus are also in me. I too am the Christ, the Daughter (or Son) of the living God.”

It is time for each of us to face and embrace our divinity, our magnificence. It is time for each of us to know that we each have a contribution to make to the whole. It is time for us to know ourselves as God has always known us – completely loveable, wholly loving, infinitely powerful, constantly connected with divine wisdom, and incapable of dying. It is time for us to accept our equality and oneness with everyone on planet Earth.

The more of us who allow the birth of the Christ to take place in the manger of our hearts, the more we will find true solutions to the problems we face in the world – solutions which work for everyone. Each of us deserves to be an “ordinary person producing extraordinary results” by allowing God to live and work through us.

As you take these thoughts and others like them into your heart, may you have an especially meaningful Christmas season this year. May this be the year you commit – or recommit – to being a part of the second coming of Christ.
