“The Power of Creation”

This past Sunday was the sixth in our “Summer Prosperity Series’ based on my book Real Wealth.  I told people on Sunday that this is another of the “advanced” lessons I do on occasion.

I began by sharing a poem by James Allen called Mind, the Master Power:
“Mind is the master power that molds and makes,
And man is mind, and ever more he takes
The tool of thought, and shaping what he wills
Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills.
He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass.
Environment is but his looking glass.”

This concept (that we have the power to co-create our lives) is actually one aspect of accepting the spiritual truth that we are all created in the image and after the likeness of God.  This doesn’t mean that we look like some super-being named God.  It means that our essence is the same, in miniature so to speak, as the Presence and Power that we at Unity often think of as “the Force.”

Just as our core is made of love, wisdom, and aliveness, so also is it made of “the power of creation.”  We are literally so powerful that nothing ever just happens to us.  Everything we experience happens through us.

The way I say this in a step of my Prayer of Transformation is:  “God is always creating my life through me, constantly giving me what I ask for through my deepest beliefs and emotions.”  The way it’s said in A Course in Miracles is:  “Everything which seems to happen to me I ask for and receive as I have asked.”

How many times have you heard someone say:

• “She made me angry.”
• “He scared me.”
• “They made me feel guilty.”

No, what people actually did was to activate feelings which were buried within us.
Whether we know it or not, our number one goal here on earth is to heal our sense of separation from our divinity, and we would literally do anything to accomplish it.  This is so even if we aren’t at all aware that this is why we create what we do – including having people “push our buttons.”

The power of creation goes way deeper than “thoughts held in mind produce after their kind,” which is the first version I heard about this principle.  What really happens is that we make decisions at an early age, and some of those decisions are out of harmony with our divinity. 

Here are some examples:

• “There is something wrong with me.”
• “I’m bad or wrong for being here or for being the sex I am.”
• “I’m a disappointment.”
• “There isn’t enough love for me.”  (This, by the way, is the origin of all later feelings of jealousy.)

These decisions are accompanied by powerful emotions like anger, fear, and guilt.  Also, once our mind makes a decision, it then becomes an evidence-gathering machine.  As we go through life, we can always prove we’re right, no matter what decision we made early in life.

The reason we keep creating situations in accord with mistaken decisions we made is that we are constantly trying to bring these decisions to the surface so we can actually heal and release them.
On Sunday, I shared stories of two people who had made mistaken decisions.  You might want to listen to the audio of the lesson on our web site (unityofthekeys.org).  The first one was Debbie Ford, who wrote the book The Secret of the Shadow.  She tells of a scene at her home when she was three years old.

The interesting thing about the scene she described is that no one was doing anything mean or thoughtless.  Even so, she decided at that point that “no one cares about me.”  She also decided that the reason no one cared about her was because “I’m not important.”

Debbie then went through the next few decades of her life having experiences and relationships where she got to be right about these two decisions.  Then, she finally learned two things.  First, she learned why she had created them (and it wasn’t because she just chose badly).  Second, she learned what do I do about it.

In her book, Debbie shares a several step process that she used herself to release herself from creating these relationships.  If, as you read this, you find yourself being ready to stop creating what you don’t want in life, and also being ready to stop having people push your buttons, I suggest you use this process.  The steps follow:

• Ask yourself, “Is there a pattern in my life which is causing me pain?”
• Be willing to feel the emotions it brings up to think about this pattern.
• Ask yourself, “Is there a childhood event which this scenario reminds me of?  Or is there a childhood scene which comes to mind that brings up these same feelings?
• Ask yourself, “What might I have I decided about myself in this childhood situation?”
• Use an affirmation to practice changing the belief.  (If you want help with this, just ask me.  I’d be glad to help.  For example, “Things always get better when I show up.”)
• Practice forgiving whomever you blamed in this childhood scene.
• Finally, ask yourself, “What wisdom can I now contribute to the world as a result of this childhood issue or scene?"

On Sunday, I shared another story about a woman who decided, again, as a result of an event where there was no malicious intent, two things:

• “There is something wrong with me.”
• “I can’t trust people.”

As a student of Debbie Ford, she used the same steps as Debbie had done, and her life began to improve dramatically.

This “power of creation” stuff is clearly the deep end of the Unity swimming pool.  However, if you really want to transform your life, I encourage you to dive right in.  This is how to follow the advice given to us in A Course In Miracles:

“Look for a solution where one can actually be found.”  Of course, the place where a solution can actually be found is right within ourselves.  It works so much better to change our deep beliefs than to try to improve our lives by changing other people.

So let this be your week to fully accept your power of creation.  The more you do, the more you will be able to create what you really do want in your life.
